Jake Tapper, full name, Jacob Paul Tapper is an American journalist, novelist, and cartoonist who was born on March 12, 1969. He is CNN’s lead Washington anchor, as well as the host of the weekday news programme The Lead with Jake Tapper and the Sunday morning public affairs program State of the Union.
Tapper worked as a Senior White House Correspondent for ABC News before joining CNN, where he received three Merriman Smith Memorial Awards from the White House Correspondents’ Association. Tapper was a part of the coverage of President Barack Obama’s inauguration, which won an Emmy for Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story. For “Target bin Laden: The Death of Public Enemy #1,” Tapper was part of a team that won an Edward R. Murrow Award for Video: Breaking News.
The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor debuted at number 10 on The New York Times Best Seller List for hardback nonfiction in November 2012. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society honored Tapper with the “Tex” McCrary Award for Excellence in Journalism for his book and reporting on veterans and servicemen.
Tapper moderated the Republican primary debate in September 2015, which garnered more than 23 million viewers, making it CNN’s most-watched program and the second-most-watched primary debate ever. He also moderated the Republican presidential debate in Miami on March 10, 2016, which drew almost 12 million viewers and received “acclaim for its depth,” according to Variety.
Jake Tapper Family and Education
Tapper was born in New York City and raised in Philadelphia’s Queen Village. Theodore S. “Ted” Tapper and Helen Anne (née Palmatier) Tapper are his parents. His Canadian mother worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center before retiring.
His father, a Chicago native, went on to become the president of South Philadelphia Pediatrics and an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College after graduating from Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School.
His parents are both Jewish, and his mother converted to Judaism after growing up as a Presbyterian. Tapper spent his summers as a child at the Jewish vacation camp Camp Ramah in the Poconos.
Tapper went to the Philadelphia School, a progressive, independent elementary school known for its monthly out-of-classroom excursions to farms, among other things.
In eighth grade, he created a comic strip for a free weekly newspaper in his hometown. Later, he studied in Akiba Hebrew Academy, an independent Jewish day school once situated in Merion, Pennsylvania, and went on to Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1991 with a B.A. in History, modified by Visual Studies, Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude.
Tapper was a member of the fraternity Alpha Chi Alpha at Dartmouth. He attended the USC School of Cinematic Arts for a short time.
