KCRA News

Sacramento, California-based KCRA-TV, also known as Channel 3, is a television station. Along with MyNetworkTV affiliate KQCA or channel 58, which is licensed to Stockton, it is owned by Hearst Television and associated with NBC. While KCRA-TV’s transmitter is located in Walnut Grove, California, the two stations share studio space on Television Circle just off D Street in the heart of Sacramento.

On September 3, 1955, KCRA 3 began transmitting in the Sacramento region from a converted dairy truck barn on the city’s north side. It was established by the Sacramento-based Kelly and Hansen families as the Central Valley Broadcasting Company. 310 10th Street in Sacramento served as the longtime home of KCRA’s original recording studios.

The station acquired the NBC affiliation from KCCC-TV, also known as channel 40, which debuted in September 1953 and became the first television station in the Sacramento market. Up until other stations started broadcasting in the market, it also had affiliations with ABC, CBS and DuMont.

The fourth hour used to air after a repeat of the 11 p.m. newscast at 2:12 a.m.; sister stations KSBW-TV in Salinas, California, WXII-TV in Greensboro, WBAL-TV in Baltimore, and WYFF in Greenville now air Today 3rd Hour on a one-hour delay due to Live with Kelly and Ryan airing in the 9 a.m. timeslot. Additionally, South Carolina chose to postpone Today’s fourth hour until the following morning.

On March 28, 2022, Top Story with Tom Llamas from NBC News Now replaced the fourth hour’s rebroadcast, effectively preempting the show and making it the only current NBC program that doesn’t air on KCRA. The Kelly Clarkson Show, Access Hollywood, and Extra are among the other syndicated shows on the channel. The corporate cousin of NBC distributes the first three.
