Linnethia Monique Johnson was born in the New York City borough of Queens. She and one of her brothers were sent to live with an aunt in Athens, Georgia, while her mother raised the other three children.

Her mother was thought to be incapable of caring for all five. She decided to continue her formal education at Morris Brown College in Atlanta for two years after graduating from Clarke Central High School in Athens.
