Cynthia Denise Bailey was born in Decatur, Alabama on February 19, 1967, and raised in Tuscumbia.
Elijah, her father, worked in an auto factory, and Barbara, her mother, in a sewing factory.
Barbara was 18 years old when she became pregnant with Cynthia, and she had another daughter, Malorie, about a year later.
Cynthia was inspired by her grandmother, Mae Frankie Ford, who worked in a sewing factory, sold hotdogs and hamburgers, cleaned houses, and volunteered to care for an elderly woman when she was growing up.
Ford was described as “the first female black entrepreneur in [her] life.”
