When Taibbi was a student at Rutgers University, he worked for the Central New Jersey Home News.
As a guest panelist on Firing Line in 1971, Taibbi had the chance to interview William Kunstler alongside William F. Buckley Jr. and two other guests. As a result, he was hired by Boston station WCVB-TV to work as an investigative reporter.
He spent six months as an ABC News correspondent in London in 1977 before leaving the position and moving back to Boston to work as a reporter and co-anchor for WNAC-TV, a competing station. Before leaving in 1983 to pursue legal studies at the University of Chicago Law School, Taibbi worked for WNEV-TV.
Taibbi was employed by WNBC-TV in New York City in 1984. The autumn of 1987 saw him transition to WCBS-TV.
