Judge Karen (Judge Karen Mills-Francis) is an American reality court-based arbitration program that premiered in first-run syndication and debuted in 48 of the top 50 U.S. markets on September 8, 2008.
Like in other court shows, such as The People’s Court and Judge Judy, small claims court proceedings are chaired by a former real-life judge. “The judge on this show is Karen Mills-Francis, an African-American woman twice elected judge of the Miami-Dade County Court, who believes that” justice is not both white and black.
She was not wearing a standard black robe, but a burgundy one instead. With the announcer saying “She ‘s tough, she’s fair, and she cares,” the introduction sequence showed her presiding over cases. Sony Pictures Television produced and broadcasted the show.
Judge Karen allowed litigants to cross-examine witnesses, with a section at the end in which Mills-Francis answers videotaped questions from viewers, to separate herself from other shows in the busy space. This section was dubbed “Ask Judge Karen”
On January 10, 2009, it was revealed that Judge Karen would not be renewed for a second season. At present, BET and TV One network reruns are being televised.

The series is filmed in Los Angeles. It is produced by Litto Entertainment; Litton revealed on November 16, 2009, that they would return Mills-Francis to Judge Karen’s Court on air.
The show premiered on Monday, September 20, 2010, and replaced the canceled Street Court (which Litton had also produced) in many markets. Judge Karen’s Court, like Judge Karen, was axed after one season, amid claims that the show was doing well and was renewed for 2011.
Entertainment Studios announced in November 2012 that in fall 2013 they would be launching their fourth court show, Supreme Justice with Judge Karen.
