Prior to joining the Global Wrestling Federation, John Layfield was a collegiate football coach, player, and had a brief stint with the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football. He made his WWF debut in 1996 using the cowboy/mountain man persona. After defeating his opponents, he would brand them with the letters JB, and soon he joined The New Blackjacks. He created the identity of JBL, a wealthy, brash businessman, while working as a stock market speculator. His ring identities have included Bad Santa, Blackjack Bradshaw, Death Mask, and Johnny Hawk. He is a 24-time WWE Champion, Triple Crown winner, and Grand Slam champion.

The Acolytes Protection Agency (APA), a feared duo of strong and tough mercenaries who spent most of their time sitting around in their “office” playing cards, drinking beer, fighting people backstage, and then going out to bars, was where Layfield first gained notoriety in the WWE during its Attitude Era under the ring name Bradshaw. During this time, he became a three-time WWF Tag Team Champion with Ron Simmons. In 2004,

He won the WWE Championship later that year and held it for 280 days. He won the Intercontinental Championship a month before retiring from professional wrestling at WrestleMania 25 in 2009, making him the 10th Grand Slam Champion and the 20th Triple Crown Champion in WWE history.

FOX & CNBC

Layfield was enlisted by CNBC as a contributor in 2004. In an effort to generate heel heat, he offered the fans three Nazi salutes while goose-stepping around the ring at a WWE house show in Munich, Germany, early in June 2004. Such a show is prohibited in Germany, and Layfield was let go by CNBC as a result of the uproar. Layfield defended himself in a Washington Post interview by saying, “I’m a bad guy on WWE TV.” It’s my job to motivate the crowd. I’ve been doing it for years. Since I’ve lived [in Germany], I am aware of how terrible the Nazi salute is, but I really didn’t give it much thought.

I’ve been to Dachau and visited the locations where countless Jews were murdered. I establish a distinction between my character and myself. That would be like to suggesting that Anthony Hopkins, who plays Hannibal Lecter, genuinely likes cannibalism.

Layfield quit CNBC and was later hired as a business pundit by Fox News and  Fox Business.

Other Media Jobs

Following his departure from WWE, Layfield was named color commentator and host for the Vyper Fight League in April 2009, which Layfield would also sponsor with Layfield Energy. However, the organization dissolved the following year, according to a press statement from Ohio Valley Wrestling owner Danny Davis.

The JBL and Renee Show, formerly known as The JBL Show and The JBL and Cole Show, is a new program that Layfield, Michael Cole, and Renee Young began hosting on WWE’s YouTube account in November 2012. The show came to an end in May 2015.

When Layfield was in charge of the Layfield Report website, a number of his thoughts and opinions were featured in various pieces. In September 2014, the website was closed.
