Bill Keller is an American journalist who works at The New York Times in New York City as a columnist. He joined The New York Times in  1984 and served as the paper’s executive editor from July 2003 until September 2011, when he stepped down to become a full-time writer.

Moreover, he is the founding editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project, an independent non-profit newsroom covering crime and punishment in America. Bill also served in the Times Moscow bureau from the year 1986 to 1991, where he was the bureau chief during the final years of the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union. For his reporting in 1988, Bill won a Pulitzer Prize.

He attended the Roman Catholic Schools St. Matthews and Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, California. In the year 1970, he graduated from Pomona College, where he began his journalistic career as a reporter for a campus newspaper known as The Collegian. Bill later completed the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in July 2000.

From July 1970 to March 1979, he served as a reporter in Portland with The Oregonian. Bill later followed with his job with Congressional Quarterly Weekly Report and the Dallas Times Herald.

He joined The New York Times in April 1984 as a domestic correspondent based in the Washington bureau. Bill then went on to serve as the Times correspondent in Moscow from December 1986 to October 1991, his last 3 years as the newspaper’s bureau chief.
