Vito Rizzuto also known as “Montreal’s Teflon Don,” was an Italian-Canadian crime boss. He was the leader of the infamous Montreal, Quebec-based Rizzuto crime family also  speculated to be the head of the Sicilian Mafia in Canada.

Rizzuto was born on February 21, 1946 in Cattolica Eraclea, Sicily, Italy .  He died on December 23, 2013 at 67 years old.

Vito Rizzuto Cause of Death

Rizzuto passed away due to complications from pneumonia, which may have been brought on by lung cancer At the Sacré-Coeur hospital in Montreal.
Although his official cause of death was listed as natural causes, since his body was never subjected to an autopsy, there has been speculation that he may have been poisoned.
On December 30, about 800 people attended Rizzuto’s funeral at the Church of the Madonna della Difesa in Montreal’s Little Italy. He was laid to rest in Saint-Leonard, Quebec’s Saint-François d’Assise cemetery.

Vito was born to  Nicolo Rizzuto his father and Libertina Manno . His mother was a local Mafia boss from their hometown named Antonio Manno. Vito was given his grandfather’s name. In 1954  his family immigrated to Canada , stopping first at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and later to Montreal, Quebec.

Vito  had three children.  Nicolo Rizzuto born on December 4, 1967. He was shot six times and killed close to his car in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighborhood of Montreal on December 28, 2009.
His other son is Leonardo Rizzuto and a daughter, Libertina “Bettina” – named after her grandmother.

Law enforcement officials claim that Rizzuto was in charge of a criminal organization that brought tons of heroin, cocaine and hashish into Canada and distributed it there.
He also allegedly laundered hundreds of millions of dollars, lent out millions more through loansharking operations and made a tidy profit from illegal gambling, fraud and contract killings. For conspiring to set Renda’s hair salon in Boucherville on fire in 1968 with the goal of defrauding insurers, Rizzuto received a two-year sentence in 1972; he served 18 months of the term.

Rizzuto was taken into custody once more for planning to bring marijuana into Canada,. Rizzuto was listed as a co-conspirator, but there was insufficient proof to bring charges against him.
Rizzuto was regarded by Canadian authorities as the most powerful mob boss in the nation, despite the Federal Bureau of Investigation only considering him a member of the New York Bonanno crime family.Rizzuto collaborated closely with the powerful Sicilian Cuntrera-Caruana Mafia family, which was Alfonso Caruana’s organization in Canada.
