Bruschi awoke on February 15, 2005, with a number of symptoms, including left-sided weakness, numbness, and vision issues. Tedy was only thirty-one at the time. Tedy was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital three days after participating in the 2005 Pro Bowl, where he was diagnosed with an ischemic stroke. The doctor concluded that a blocked artery in the brain was the cause of the stroke.
He also had a congenital heart defect known as a foramen ovale, which is characterized by a small hole in the wall that divides the left and right atria of the heart. After undergoing several months of rehabilitation with Boston’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Tedy declared he would miss the 2005 NFL season.
On October 16, 2005, the Patriots declared that Tedy was medically cleared to return to the football field. Three days after the announcement, the analyst returned to the practice field with the team. He was officially activated by the Patriots on October 29, and he took the field against the Buffalo Bills the following evening. During the game, Tedy’s return was discussed in multiple interviews on ESPN. He was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week after the game.
With the exception of the final regular-season match against Miami and the opening playoff match against Jacksonville, he played in the majority of the season’s remaining games.
