He is the National Football League’s (NFL) quarterbacks coach for the Carolina Panthers. Before transferring to Sam Houston State, he spent three seasons as a college football player for SMU.
In June 2019, he started working as an NFL studio analyst for ESPN. NFL Live, SportsCenter, Get Up!, and other shows feature him. He played for ten different NFL teams over the course of his 17 professional seasons. McCown went to Jacksonville High School, where he experienced a significant growth spurt that improved his football playing prospects. He was selected the East Texas Player of the Year in 1997, his senior year, and he helped his team make it to the postseason. In addition, he played basketball, where as a shooting guard he was named to the All-District second team.
From 1998 to 2000 he  played football for Southern Methodist University as a college student. He completed his three seasons at SMU with 4,022 yards and 27 touchdowns passing. He threw 34 interceptions as well. McCown transferred to Sam Houston State for his senior year, and in just one season, he surpassed his three-year total of touchdowns at SMU.
He completed his career with the Sam Houston State Bearkats with 3,481 yards and 32 touchdown passes. With a 10-3 record at the end of the regular season, the team advanced to the Division I-AA playoffs and defeated Northern Arizona. In the end, Montana defeated the Bearkats in the I-AA quarterfinals. Later, McCown participated in the Senior Bowl in 2002.

His passer rating of 109.0 was the highest in the history of the Bears team. For the New York Jets in 2017, McCown also started 13 games at quarterback, completing 67 percent of his passes for 2,926 yards and 18 touchdowns.
He had a career spanning from 2002 to 2006 with Arizona, to 2006 with Detroit, to 2007 with Oakland, to 2008 with Miami, to 2009 with Carolina, to 2011 with San Francisco, to 2011 with Chicago, to 2014 with Tampa Bay, to 2015 with Cleveland, and to 2018 with the New York Jets. 2010 saw McCown play for both the United Football League’s Hartford Colonials and the NFL, where he led the league in passer rating (79.3).
