From a professional standpoint, he started gymnastics at a very young age. At fourteen years old, he won the 1972 U.S. Junior National Championships; at seventeen, he won the Gymnastics Federation All-Around championship.
He was also the youngest member of the Olympic team in the Summer Olympics of 1979. In a similar vein, he took home the gold in team all-around at the Pan American Games in 1975.
Bart was not allowed to compete in the 1980 Summer Olympics because of the boycott. After four years, he won two gold medals in the men’s parallel bars and team all-around events at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
