Career
He has over thirty cinematic credits, the most of which are in evil or antagonistic parts, including Never Say Never Again, Superman III, Death Wish 3 and The Last Outlaw. One of the rare heroic parts he has played is Airk Thaughbaer in the 1988 fantasy Willow, as well as the dashing British officer from Virginia Captain Leroy in Sharpe’s Eagle.
Rich Man, Poor Man and Tales From The Crypt both featured him. He played John Garrideb in Granada TV’s Sherlock Holmes series “The Mazarin Stone” in 1994. The story’s events were changed and blended with The Three Garridebs Adventure.
On Happy Days, he played Chuck Cunningham, the eldest sibling. Until the episode “Guess Who’s Coming to Christmas,” he was replaced by Randolph Roberts.
Chuck was never seen again, but he was mentioned in a few more episodes, the last of which being “Fish and the Fins.” Following that, Chuck was completely written off the show, with succeeding episodes presenting the Cunningham family as having only two children, Richie being the older.
The figure gave rise to the derisive term “Chuck Cunningham Syndrome,” which refers to characters that mysteriously vanish from television series only to be retconned as never having existed. O’Herlihy did not want to be pigeonholed with television parts, preferring instead to work in movies.
In the George Lucas film Willow, directed by his Happy Days brother Ron Howard, he played a warrior. He also played Jabin, the Kazon First Mate, in Star Trek: Voyager’s pilot episode “Caretaker.” He also appeared in the television series The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman.

By the 1990s, O’Herlihy had made a permanent move to the United Kingdom, where he preferred to work in the theatre and on television, including appearances in shows like Coded Hostile, Sharpe, Jonathan Creek, and Midsomer Murders.
In 2009, O’Herlihy made his big screen comeback as Sheriff Vaines in the sequel to Neil Marshall’s cult horror film The Descent 2, and over a decade later, he’ll play writer John Anderson in director Nic Saunders’ Queen of the Redwood Mountains, a film inspired by the authors of the Beat Generation that will be released in 2021.
