At that time, she held the distinction of being the youngest woman to lead a major NOW chapter. While she initially served two years on NOW’s board of directors, Bruce later voiced criticism of the organization in one of her books. During the early 1990s, she took a prominent role in denouncing the sexualized violence depicted in the novel “American Psycho” and spearheaded an effort to boycott all titles published by Knopf, the book’s publisher, for a year.
In 1995, following the verdict in the O.J. Simpson murder trial, Bruce voiced her perspective, emphasizing the importance of teaching children about violence against women rather than focusing on racism. She conveyed a message to Simpson, stating, “You are not welcome here, you are not welcome in this country, you are not welcome on our airwaves, you are not welcome in our culture.”
She declined to discuss the issue on a talk show, reportedly remarking, “I don’t have time to argue with a group of black women; we’ve moved beyond that.” In response, the NOW Executive Board censured her for what they deemed “racially insensitive comments.” Subsequently, in May 1996, Bruce resigned as the president of Los Angeles NOW, asserting that the censure resulted from her emphasis on domestic violence rather than defense attorney Johnnie Cochran’s “racial issues” trial argument. Since then, she has critiqued NOW and the political left in her writings, contending that the feminist establishment in the U.S. has forsaken authentic feminism. Bruce resigned from NOW five months later, in May 1996, and established a new organization called the Women’s Progress Alliance with Denise Brown, the sister of Nicole Brown Simpson.
In 1997, Bruce hosted an overnight weekend talk show on KFI. She also served as the host of a national radio program on Talk Radio Network throughout much of the 2000s. While she was a lifelong Democrat until 2008 when she registered as unaffiliated, Bruce actively contributed to various Democratic campaigns in the 1990s, including those of Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein, and Bill Clinton.
In 2003, Bruce was appointed to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s transition team after his successful recall election against Gray Davis.
