McManaman began a new career in television commentary after quitting professional soccer in 2005. He covered the Champions League Final for ITV, the 2006 Singapore Open for ESPN Star Sports, and the Setanta Sports Cup for Setanta Sports.
In July 2010, Steve joined Ruud Gullit, Jürgen Klinsmann and commentator Ian Darke on the ESPN coverage team as a commentary analyst for the 2010 World Cup. After that, he signed on with the network to work as an in-game analyst for the Premier League, Major League Soccer, the MLS Cup 2010, the FIFA Confederations Cup 2013, and even the 2014 World Cup. Steve also joined Ian Darke as a regular co-commentator for the tournament.
He and Darke covered Euro 2012 as the primary ESPN commentary team. Steve, along with Steve Nicol, Shaka Hislop, Robbie Mustoe, Robbie Earle, and Gabriele Marcotti, was a guest on ESPN PressPass, a daily panel show.
He made history by being the first player to play for the England Under-21 team without having played for a first team. Following his professional debut with Liverpool FC in 1990, McMananan left the team in July 1999 to join Real Madrid. He played 364 games for the club.
