Cliff Drysdale Career
Since the network’s inaugural tennis telecast, Cliff Drysdale, a former championship player and a vocal and significant leader in issues both on and off the court, has been an analyst for ESPN’s tennis coverage. His lifetime dedication to the game of tennis led to his induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013.
“Cliff is one of the special voices in sports television and few in any sport have combined such an outstanding career in competition with leadership roles off the court. We are proud to call him our own,” ESPN president John Skipper said following Drysdale’s selection.
In 1963 and 1964, Drysdale won the Dutch Open singles championship. He advanced to the 1965 U.S. Championship singles final and won the German Championship singles title in 1965. In the fourth round of the 1968 US Open, he triumphed over Rod Laver. Drysdale won five singles titles and six doubles titles during his Open era career, including the US Open doubles championship in 1972 with Roger Taylor. Throughout his playing career, he employed the two-handed backhand shot, which he invented, to great effect.
Among the players signed by Lamar Hunt in 1968 for the newly established professional World Championship Tennis group was Drysdale, one of the Handsome Eight. He was elected president of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which Drysdale, Donald Dell, and Jack Kramer had founded in 1972.
