Shia LaBeouf Family
LaBeouf was born in Los Angeles, California on June 11, 1986. Shayna Saide and Jeffrey LaBeouf raised him as their only child. His mother is a painter, jewelry designer, and former dancer, and his father is a Vietnam War veteran and former professional clown.
LaBeouf’s mother is Jewish, and his father is Christian of Cajun French descent. LaBeouf has stated that he is Jewish and that he was raised with “both sides” in mind; he had a Bar Mitzvah ceremony and was also baptized. He went to a Christian camp, which was one of the camps he attended. Shia, his first name in Hebrew, means ‘God’s gift.’
LaBeouf’s parents were “hippies,” his father was “tough as nails and a different breed of man,” and his upbringing was similar to a “hippy lifestyle,” with his parents being “pretty weird people, but they loved me and I loved them.” During his childhood, he accompanied his father to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
LaBeouf has also claimed that his father verbally and mentally abused him and once pointed a gun at him during a Vietnam War flashback. LaBeouf has stated that his father was “on drugs” and was placed in drug rehabilitation for heroin addiction during his childhood, while his mother was “trying to hold down the fort.”
His parents eventually divorced, owing primarily to financial difficulties, and LaBeouf had what he has described as a “good childhood,” growing up poor in Echo Park with his mother, who sold fabrics and brooches. At one point, LaBeouf’s uncle planned to adopt him because his parents could no longer afford him and “had too much pride to go on welfare or food stamps.” To cope with his parents’ divorce, he would perform for his family, impersonating his father. LaBeouf maintains a close relationship with and financially supports both of his parents.
He attended the Los Angeles Unified School District’s 32nd Street Visual and Performing Arts Magnet and Alexander Hamilton High School, though he received the majority of his education from tutors.
In an interview, LaBeouf stated that he is grateful for his childhood memories and regards some of them as scars.
