Rebecca Alexander Bio

Rebecca Ann Alexander (born February 4, 1979) is a psychotherapist and author from the United States. Alexander, who is deafblind due to Usher syndrome, wrote a memoir in 2014 about coping with her deteriorating vision as well as her achievements as an extreme athlete, such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. The American Foundation for the Blind honored her with the Helen Keller Achievement Award in 2016.

Rebecca Ann Alexander was born on February 4, 1979, in Oakland, California, to mother Terry Pink Alexander and attorney father David Alexander. She has two brothers: a twin brother, Daniel, and an older brother, Peter Alexander, an NBC News journalist and White House correspondent.

Alexander was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a type of vision loss, when he was twelve years old. She played soccer in school, competed in the Maccabiah Games, and attended Temple Sinai in Oakland. A fall from a second-story window at the age of eighteen required months of physical rehabilitation and delayed her start to college. She began experiencing tinnitus when she started college and was diagnosed with Usher syndrome type III at the age of twenty.

Alexander received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his master’s degrees in social work and public health from Columbia University.

Not Fade Away: A Memoir of Senses Lost and Found, Alexander’s memoir, was cowritten with Sascha Alper and published in 2014. Alexander promoted her book on Today, Morning Joe, and other shows. In 2019, it was reported that Not Fade Away was being adapted into a film screenplayed by Lindsey Ferrentino, produced by John Krasinski and David O. Russell, and starring Emily Blunt.

According to a book review in The New York Times, Alexander “pushes herself to grueling physical feats,” such as marathons and week-long charity bike rides. Climbing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, swimming the frigid 1.5 miles of ocean water between Alcatraz Island and San Francisco’s Aquatic Park, and summiting Mount Kilimanjaro are among her travels. She also instructs spinning and high-intensity training at a gym in New York City.

Alexander was one of the performers in Ali Stroker’s 2019 touring production “Silent No More,” which highlighted the stories of deaf and hard of hearing people.

She has received several honors, including the Helen Keller Achievement Award from the American Foundation for the Blind in 2016, the Eagle Award from Disability Rights Advocates in 2017, and the Bicentennial Alumni Award from the University of Michigan in 2017. She threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Boston Red Sox game in 2018 to raise awareness of Usher syndrome.
