From 1968 to 1976, he worked as a professional goalkeeper for Club America and Atlante in Mexico’s First Division as well as the Mexican National Team. Due to a knee injury, Rafael was forced to miss play in 1974.
He kept up his ardent devotion to soccer, coaching a number of First Division teams in Mexico, including Pachuca, Club Atlante, and Tecos UAG.
