Born as Rachel Isum in Pasadena, California, she attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles and later pursued her education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). It was at UCLA where she crossed paths with Robinson in 1941, just before he left the university when his baseball eligibility expired.
In 1945, she successfully graduated from UCLA, earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Rachel and Robinson tied the knot on February 10, 1946, a year before his major league breakthrough. Together, they raised three children: Jackie, Jr. (1946–1971), Sharon (born 1950), and David (born 1952).
Following Jackie Robinson’s retirement from baseball in 1956, Rachel Robinson delved deeper into her nursing career, eventually obtaining a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing from New York University in 1959.
She was a researcher and clinician at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Department of Social and Community Psychiatry for five years. Subsequently, she assumed the roles of assistant professor at Yale School of Nursing and Director of Nursing at the Connecticut Mental Health Center.
In 1972, she established the Jackie Robinson Development Corporation, a real estate development firm specializing in providing housing for low- to moderate-income families, where she served as president for a decade.
Additionally, in 1973, she founded the Jackie Robinson Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing educational and leadership opportunities for minority students. The foundation has since supported over 1,000 minority students, maintaining an impressive 97% graduation rate among its scholars.
