Haley left for a year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan as a captain in the South Carolina Army National Guard in January 2012. The unit worked as an Agribusiness Development Team in Helmand Province, assisting Afghan farmers in improving farming techniques and developing cash crops to replace opium poppies. Haley served as a liaison between the military and civilian authorities. He is thought to be the first governor’s spouse to serve on active duty in a war zone.
Marines serving with Haley in Helmand Province dubbed him FGOSC (First Gentleman of South Carolina), a reference to the US First Lady.
