Mark Lanegan, full name Mark William Lanegan (November 25, 1964 – February 22, 2022) was a singer, songwriter, author, and musician from the United States.
He rose to prominence as the lead singer of Screaming Trees, but he was also a member of Queens of the Stone Age and The Gutter Twins.
He recorded eleven solo studio albums, three with Isobel Campbell, and two with Duke Garwood. Lanegan’s baritone voice was described as “as scratchy as a three-day beard yet as supple and pliable as moccasin leather.”

Lanegan was hospitalized in March 2021 with severe COVID-19 and nearly died. He was temporarily deaf, unable to walk, and had been in and out of a coma for several months as a result of the disease.
Lanegan described his beliefs in a number of COVID-19 conspiracy theories in a 2020 interview, including the idea that the disease is linked to 5G technology.
He also mentioned feeling paranoid that he and his wife were being watched by technological devices. However, in 2021 he said he had concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic was a “natural event” and also admitted that “I was one of those knuckleheads who was wary of the vaccine. But I learned my lesson. I’ll be the first one to get a booster shot when it’s available in Ireland.”
Lanegan died on February 22, 2022, at the age of 57, at his home in Killarney, Ireland.

In 2003, he formed The Gutter Twins with Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs, released three collaboration albums with Belle and Sebastian singer Isobel Campbell, and has contributed to releases by Melissa Auf der Maur, Martina Topley-Bird, Creature with the Atom Brain, Moby, Bomb the Bass, Soulsavers, Tinariwen, The Twilight Singers, Manic Street Preachers, and Unkle, among others.
