Joe Budden was born on August 31, 1980 in East Harlem, New York City, to Joseph Budden and Fay Southerland. When he was 13 years old, he and his mother and older brother moved to Jersey City, New Jersey, where he attended Lincoln High School.

Despite having a difficult childhood, Budden showed an early talent for rap music and was sent to Laurinburg Institute, a boarding school in North Carolina, to hone his skills. However, upon returning to Jersey, Budden developed an addiction to drugs, specifically angel dust.

In 1997, he had a confrontation with his mother and voluntarily entered rehab in order to attend his senior prom. He did not graduate from high school and fathered a child with an older woman by the age of 20.

Determined to turn his life around for the sake of his child, Budden began taking music more seriously and teamed up with producer Dub-B, also known as White Boy, in 2001.

Joe Budden quickly gained popularity in the mixtape scene and signed with Def Jam Recordings in 2002. He gained widespread attention through the release of the single “Focus”, which reached the No. 43 spot on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

On May 8, 2003, Budden released “Pump It Up” as the lead single for his upcoming album. “Pump It Up” received a Grammy Award nomination for the Best Male Rap Solo Performance at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. On June 10, 2003, Budden released his debut studio album, also titled Joe Budden. It debuted at No. 8 on the US Billboard 200 and sold 95,000 units in its first week.

It went on to sell over 420,000 copies in the United States. The album’s second single, “Fire (Yes, Yes Y’all)”, featuring guest vocals by American rapper Busta Rhymes, reached No. 18 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and No. 48 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Budden proposed to the couple during a live episode of The Joe Budden Podcast in New York in December 2018. The couple’s engagement has since been called off. Budden spent the night in jail on March 30, 2012, and missed a Slaughterhouse concert in his hometown because of a $75 parking ticket.
