Previously, Moreland was employed by his alma mater, Texas Longhorn football and baseball games’ KVET radio broadcasts, as a color analyst. For three seasons, from 2011 to 2013, he worked as a full-time radio color analyst for the Chicago Cubs on WGN-AM and the Cubs Radio Network. In the Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1978 to 1989, he was an outfielder, catcher, and infielder for five different teams. He played for the Detroit Tigers and then the Baltimore Orioles in his final MLB season.

He had previously played for the Chicago Cubs (1982–87), the Philadelphia Phillies (1978–81), and the San Diego Padres (1988). He batted.307 with 14 home runs and 106 RBIs in 1985 and 27 home runs and 88 RBIs in 1987 while playing for the Cubs. The Philadelphia Phillies selected Moreland in the seventh round of the 1975 Major League Baseball Draft.
