Prior to working for ESPN, Barr had his own production company from 2002 to 2003, creating and reporting on programs and segments for Court TV and The National Geographic Channel. KSTP-TV in Minneapolis/St. Paul (1999–2002); WBFF–TV in Baltimore (1997–1999); WHTM–TV in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (1995–1997); WTHI–TV in Terre Haute, Indiana (1993–1959); TV–43 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky (1992–1999); and WFIU–FM in Bloomington, Indiana (1990–1992) were the stations where he worked as a reporter before that.

A two-time Peabody Award winner for reporting, Barr was honored for his coverage of the NFL’s concussion crisis in 2013 and the Larry Nassar sexual assault scandal in 2019, which led to significant reforms at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics.
