Joel was Gatorade Player and three-time Florida Mr. Basketball winner who joined the University of North Carolina after a stellar high school career. After helping UNC win the championship and was named the 2017 NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Berry  announced his professional basketball retirement official on the “Ceiling is the Roof” podcast on August 24, 2021.

Joel Berry II, one of North Carolina’s most accomplished basketball players, is a college basketball analyst for the ACC Network, ESPN’s channel devoted to games played in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Berry makes an appearance on the iconic basketball program Nothing But Net after joining ACCN in October 2021.

Berry, a four-year player and three-year starter for North Carolina, assisted in guiding the Tar Heels to consecutive NCAA championship games (2016–17), including the 2017 title game. As a sophomore, Berry led North Carolina to a 77-74 loss to Villanova thanks to a last-second three-pointer. He finished with 20 points and four assists.

He finished with 22 points and six assists as UNC defeated Gonzaga to lower the nets a year later. Berry became the first player since Bill Walton in the early 1970s to score 20 points or more in back-to-back championship games, winning the award for Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.

Berry is one of only six Tar Heels to start in two national championship games and the only one to receive All-Final Four honors in both the 2016 and 2017 seasons. He participated in 14 NCAA Tournament victories in total, which is tied for second in school history.

Additionally, he participated in 10 ACC Tournament victories, which is a Tar Heel record. He was named MVP in 2016 after leading Carolina to the ACC Tournament victory.

Berry was one of eight finalists for the James E. Sullivan Award, given by the Amateur Athletic Union to the best amateur athlete in the country, as a senior. Additionally, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) selected him for their third team All-American. Berry played in 144 games with 112 starts for Carolina, scoring 1,813 points and dishing out 451 assists.

Prior to his retirement in 2021, Berry played professionally for two seasons in the NBA G League and one season in Turkey.

Berry, an Apopka, Florida native, was the first basketball player to receive three Florida Mr. Basketball awards. As a senior in 2014, he was also a McDonald’s All-American.
