Jesse Lee Bond, 20, was at the SY Wilson store in Arlington, Tennessee, in 1939. According to reports, Bond, like many sharecroppers, went to the store to buy crops. Bond asked for a receipt when he paid for his goods, which was frowned upon because it was assumed that Black people would try to defraud white store owners.

“- old man Wilson became enraged and yelled, “Get that person and bring them back into me… When [Bond] returned, they began shooting him and riddling him to the outhouse. “They took him, dragged him, castrated him, and dumped him in the Hatchie River,” Bond’s nephew Ronald Morris told ABC 24 News.

Bolden told Michigan Radio that the coroner ruled her great-brutal grandfather’s murder was a drowning accident. Charles Wilson and William Johnson, the murderers, walked free. This tragedy inspired Bolden to study law. She is now adamant that justice be served for the rest of her family tree.

Bolden isn’t the only one working to preserve her great-legacy. grandfather’s

According to ABC, the Lynching Sites Project of Memphis collaborated with Bond’s family to memorialize him and place a historical marker at the site where he died.
