On May 13, 2009, McKelway interviewed blogger Michael Rogers live as co-host of Washington, D.C.’s Let’s Talk Live on local cable’s TBD TV (Formerly News Channel 8). The two talked about Rogers’ efforts to “out” covertly gay politicians who oppose gay rights. McKelway once reprimanded Rogers, saying, “I’d take you outside and give you a punch across the face… I think you’re hurting innocent people.”

In protest of BP’s handling of the Gulf oil spill, religious and environmental groups held a rally in July 2010 that McKelway covered live during the noon program. Regarding BP’s support to Democratic President Barack Obama, McKelway made remarks.
Following the broadcast, McKelway met with Bill Lord, the station manager for WJLA, who took issue with the facts about BP’s contribution being revealed in the live report. After a contentious discussion, Lord fired McKelway from both his reporting and anchoring positions on the early-morning Good Morning Washington news program. Later, on September 17, 2010, The Washington Post reported that McKelway had been fired. He was hired by Fox News after being let go by WJLA. He left Fox News in 2020 due to scandal, fact-checking concerns, and odd remarks.
