In 2012, he was also recognized as the sports Alumnus of the Year. He attended PLU after graduating from Puyallup High School, and from 1992 to 1995, he helped the Lutes win four straight Northwest Conference championships. He competed at No. 1 or No. 2 singles throughout those three years, and in 1994 and 1995, he represented the university at NAIA national competitions.

Midway through the 1990s, Egan started his media career in a number of tiny Pacific Northwest towns before moving back to the Seattle region to work for Northwest Cable News as a sports anchor and producer on NorthWest Sports Tonight. He started working as a reporter and anchor for KING 5 Sports in June 2007.

He has also received nine Emmy awards in the previous ten years. In 2009, he received an Emmy Award for Sports Anchoring, and in 2010, he received the Edward R. Murrow Award for Sports Story of the Year. For his coverage of high school sports, he was given the Silver Helmet Award by the Washington State Football Coaches Association in 2016. Additionally, as a sports reporter for KING-TV, he has covered two Super Bowls and two Olympic Games.
