Terry McQueen Cause of Death
Terry Leslie McQueen, the daughter of late actor Steve McQueen and the head of a Malibu film production company, died at the age of 38.
According to her mother, McQueen’s first wife, Neile Adams, now Neile Toffel, Terry died of respiratory failure Thursday at UCLA Medical Center.
“Terry had been plagued by a slew of medical issues in recent years,” her mother explained. “She had defied the odds and recovered completely from a successful liver transplant operation last November.”
Toffel stated that she and her husband, Alvin E. Toffel, would now raise Terry’s ten-year-old daughter, Molly.
Terry McQueen was 19 years old when her father died of cancer at the age of 50 in 1980. Her brother, actor Chad McQueen, is still alive.
According to her mother, McQueen’s production company, Red Line, had two ongoing film projects.
Funeral services will be held at Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Donations in McQueen’s memory can be made to the Boys Republic, 3493 Grand Ave., Chino Hills, CA 91709, or the Jo Ann Barr Transplant Foundation at UCLA.

McQueen, who was dyslexic and partially deaf as a child due to an ear infection, struggled to adjust to school and his new life. His stepfather abused him to the point where he left home at the age of nine to live on the streets.
He later reflected, “When a child does not receive love when he is young, he begins to wonder if he is good enough. My mother did not love me, and I lacked a father. ‘Well, I must not be very good,’ I reasoned.” He was soon running with a street gang and committing minor crimes. His mother, unable to control his behavior, returned him to her grandparents and great-uncle in Slater.
Julia McQueen wrote to her uncle Claude when she was 12 years old, requesting that her son be returned to her to live in Los Angeles, California, where she lived with her second husband. According to McQueen, he and his new stepfather “”We immediately locked horns.” McQueen remembers him as “a prime son of a bitch” who was not afraid to use his fists on him and his mother. McQueen was sent back to live with Claude for the final time as he began to rebel once more.
He left Claude’s farm without saying goodbye at the age of 14 and briefly joined a circus. He returned to his mother and stepfather in Los Angeles, where he resumed his life as a gang member and petty criminal. McQueen was arrested for stealing hubcaps and turned over to his stepfather, who severely beaten him. He hurled the teenager down a flight of stairs. “You lay your stinking hands on me again, and I swear I’ll kill you,” McQueen said to his stepfather.
