Under Buddy Mahar, he served as Columbia University’s assistant coach.Afterwards, from 1980 to 1983, Greenberg worked with Roy Chipman as an assistant coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh participated in the 1981 and 1982 NCAA Tournaments during that time.
He served as Terry Holland’s assistant during the 1983–84 season as Virginia advanced to the 1984 NCAA Tournament Final Four. Later, from 1985 to 1987, Greenberg assisted Bill Foster at the University of Miami.
Under Joe Harrington, he was appointed associate head coach at Long Beach State. In 1988 and 1990, Long Beach State participated in the National Invitation Tournaments. Greenberg was elevated to head coach at Long Beach State in 1990. Long Beach State finished second in program history to Jerry Tarkanian with 105–70 wins in six seasons under Greenberg’s coaching.During the Greenberg era, the team participated in the 1993 NCAA Tournament, the 1995 NCAA Tournament, and the 1992 NIT.
From 1996 to 2003, Greenberg led the University of South Florida to a 108–100 record while serving as head coach.In the 1999–00 season, South Florida won the Conference USA regular season title and qualified for the NIT following the campaign.Florida was included in the 2002 NIT as well. He assisted in the donation of 2,400 student tickets for the NIT vs. Temple game in 2005.He raised the number of student tickets donated to 3000 for the three NIT games held at Cassell Coliseum in 2008.
The Hokies defeated #1 Wake Forest, 78–71, on January 21, 2009. At the time, Wake Forest was the only unbeaten team in the country. Under Greenberg, Virginia Tech had its most successful season with a 25–9 record in 2009–10 and qualified for every NIT from 2009–2011.The Hokies defeated #1 Duke on February 27, 2011, at Cassell Coliseum.
