Willard Scott Early Life and Career Beginning
Scott was born on March 7, 1934, in Alexandria, Virginia, and attended George Washington High School. As a 16-year-old, he expressed an interest in broadcasting by working as an NBC page at WRC (AM), NBC’s owned-and-operated radio station in Washington, D.C.
Scott subsequently went to American University, where he worked at WAMU-AM, the university’s radio station, from 1951 to 1953, alongside fellow student Ed Walker. While at American University, Scott joined the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion.
Scott and Walker co-hosted the nightly Joy Boys radio show on NBC-owned WRC radio from 1955 through 1972. (this was interrupted from 1956 to 1958 when Scott served on active duty with the U.S. Navy.).
Walker would memorize or scribble down a list of characters and a few lead lines to set up a situation, which Scott would then commit to memory or scribble down on his Braille typewriter (Walker was blind since birth).
The Washington Post wrote in a 1999 story that the Joy Boys “ruled Washington, offering entertainment, camaraderie, and community to a city on the edge of great change” when they were at the height of their fame in the mid-1960s.
The Joy Boys show aired on WRC until 1972, when it was moved to WWDC, a cross-town station, for another two years. They were “closer than most brothers,” Scott wrote in his book The Joy of Living, of their deep professional and personal friendship, which lasted until Walker’s death in October 2015.
During the 1960s, Scott split his time between radio and hosting children’s television shows. He played characters such as Commander Retro and Bozo the Clown on WRC-TV, the sister station of WRC Radio. Scott began working as a weekday weatherman on WRC-TV in 1970.
