He was a player for the Hartford Whalers (1984–1990), New York Islanders (1990–1995), New York Rangers (1995–1996), Los Angeles Kings (1996–1999), Atlanta Thrashers (1999–2002), and St. Louis Blues (2002) for 21 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL).

While still playing in the NHL, Ferraro started his broadcasting career doing analysis for NHL 2Night on ESPN with John Buccigross and Barry Melrose. Most recently, he worked as a studio and game analyst for the NHL on TSN.
He began working as a full-time broadcaster for TSN in 2008, and since then, he has grown to be one of the most reputable hockey commentators in Canada.
