Prabhavati Yugandhar Son Satya Nadella
Satya Narayana Nadella, born on August 19, 1967, in Hyderabad, is an influential Indian-American business executive. Currently serving as the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft, he assumed the role of CEO in 2014, succeeding Steve Ballmer, and later became the chairman in 2021, succeeding John W. Thompson.
Nadella hails from a Telugu-speaking Hindu family, with his mother Prabhavati being a Sanskrit lecturer and his father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 1962 batch from Bukkapuram in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. Nadella’s paternal lineage traces back to Nadella village in Guntur district (now Palnadu district), with his grandfather migrating to Bukkapuram.
Educationally, Nadella attended the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, before earning a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988. He pursued an MS in computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, receiving his degree in 1990 and later obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997.
In 1992, Nadella married Anupama, the daughter of his father’s IAS batchmate. The couple, both only children, had three children—a son and two daughters. They resided in Clyde Hill and Bellevue, Washington. Tragically, their son Zain, who had cerebral palsy and was legally blind, passed away in February 2022 at the age of 26. Nadella has acknowledged that being Zain’s father was a transformative experience.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Nadella is known for his passion for literature, particularly American and Indian poetry, and his love for cricket, a sport he played on his school team. He attributes cricket to enhancing his leadership skills. Furthermore, Nadella and Anupama are part of the ownership group of the Seattle Sounders FC, a Major League Soccer club.
Nadella is also an author, with his book titled “Hit Refresh,” delving into his life, Microsoft career, and perspectives on how technology will shape the future. He pledged the book’s profits to Microsoft Philanthropies and subsequently to nonprofit organizations.
