Carlesimo played basketball for coach Digger Phelps at Fordham University, where he graduated in 1971. After graduating, he started working as an assistant coach at the school. In 1975, he took over as head coach of New Hampshire College for a single year, which was his first head coaching position.
With a 14-13 record at the end of the 1975–1976 season, the New Hampshire Penmen emerged victorious in the Mayflower Conference. Additionally, Carlesimo enjoyed success as a Division I coach at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, where he guided the team to one NIT berth in six years, from 1976 to 1982. Carlesimo also coached in Puerto Rico for a while during the summers.

Carlesimo most recently served as the Brooklyn Nets’ head coach, guiding them to the 2013 NBA Playoffs. He led the Portland Trail Blazers to a winning record and the NBA Playoffs in his first season as a coach after making his NBA coaching debut in 1994. Carlesimo led the Golden State Warriors from 1997 to 1999 as their head coach, following four seasons in Portland.
After joining head coach Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs coaching staff in 2002, Carlesimo went on to win three NBA Championships. Throughout his career, he has also worked as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors, the Oklahoma Thunder, and the Seattle SuperSonics.
As an assistant coach on the 1992 U.S. Men’s Basketball team, he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He has also served as an analyst for Spurs Television, Turner Sports, and NBC Sports in the past.
