Fried declared her candidacy for governor of Florida in the 2022 Florida gubernatorial election on June 1, 2021.
In the Democratic primary, she will face Charlie Crist, a former Florida governor and U.S. Representative.
If Fried wins the primary, she will almost certainly face Republican incumbent Governor Ron DeSantis.
Before entering the race, Fried slammed DeSantis, calling him a “authoritarian dictator on the verge of fascism,” and attacking him for his response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as his signing of an election reform bill that she called voter suppression. Fried also blasted Florida’s “rigged system,” calling it corrupt and anti-democratic.
Fried set herself apart from Crist, a politician since his election to the Florida Senate in 1992, by adopting the campaign slogan “Something New.”
She described Crist’s former Republican Party membership and chastised him for his support for tough-on-crime legislation throughout his career.
Fried blamed Crist for creating Florida’s modern unemployment system, which collapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, Crist’s gubernatorial successor Rick Scott created the system, not Crist.
Bio
Nicole Heather Fried (born December 13, 1977) is a lawyer and politician from Florida who has been the state’s 12th Commissioner of Agriculture since 2019.
Fried, who is a Democrat, graduated from the University of Florida in 2003. She previously worked in a variety of fields, including corporate law, foreclosure defense, and as a public defender.
Fried has also been a prominent lobbyist for the Florida marijuana industry.
She narrowly defeated state representative Matt Caldwell in the 2018 Florida Commissioner of Agriculture election by less than 7,000 votes out of over eight million votes cast, a margin of 0.08%.
Fried is the first woman to hold the position, and she was the only Democrat to win a statewide race in Florida in 2018.
During her tenure, she has redesigned gas pump stickers, advocated for a Florida gun law bill, participated in the Florida v. Georgia water-rights case, and appointed two lobbyists for the Florida Sugar Cane League.

She also ran for the Democratic Party’s nomination for governor of Florida in 2022, but lost to Charlie Crist.
Parents and Education
Nicole Heather Fried was born in Miami, Florida, on December 13, 1977, to Ronald, an attorney, and Lori, a stay-at-home mother.
Fried and her younger sister were raised primarily by their mother, who became a preschool teacher after her parents divorced when she was 13 years old. Fried attended Miami Palmetto High School.
Fried received her bachelor’s degree in political science and her master’s degree in political campaigning from the University of Florida, where she was student body president and a member of Florida Blue Key.
She earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida in 2003.
Career
Fried worked at Holland & Knight in Jacksonville after graduation, alongside Ashley Moody, a University of Florida friend who would later serve as Florida Attorney General alongside her.
Fried left Holland & Knight in 2006 to become a public defender for Florida’s 8th circuit court, which covers much of North Central Florida, including Alachua County.
Fried worked as a foreclosure defense attorney from 2009 to 2011, when she joined the Colodny Fass law and lobbying firm.
As a lobbyist, she represented the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, the Walt Disney Company, Duke Energy, and HCA Healthcare.
Fried founded her own lobbying firm, Igniting Florida, in Broward County in 2016.

Husband
Fried’s fiancee, Jake Bergmann, is a well-known marijuana business owner in Florida.
Because Bergmann’s business frequently involves dealings with the Florida Department of Agriculture, her relationship with him has been criticized as a conflict of interest.
Fried and Bergmann had a verbal argument in June 2020 at a hotel in Fort Lauderdale following a car accident in the hotel’s parking lot.
According to a security guard who witnessed the incident, Bergmann threw a trash can and shoved Fried, which Fried denies.
Bergmann was escorted off the property by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department, and a formal police report was filed; no arrests were made.
Fried denied Bergmann was physically abusive to her and replaced a number of high-level staffers who criticized him after the incident.
Fried is outspoken about her Judaism. She was a member of B’nai B’rith, a Jewish service organization, in high school. Fried also considered moving to Israel and joining the Israeli Defense Forces. Fried was sworn in as agriculture commissioner after being elected using the first Hebrew Bible published in the United States.
