When Comaneci was six years old, Bela Karolyi noticed her performing cartwheels outside of school and decided to enroll her in an experimental gymnastics school. At seven years old, she started formal training with him and his wife, Marta. While many other students at the school were required to live at the boarding school, she was able to continue living at home because she was a native of the town.
Having joined the home town team that same year, Comaneci made history as the youngest gymnast to win the Romanian Nationals at the age of 9. She participated in her first international competition the following year and took home her first all-around title.
She competed in significant junior gymnast competitions for the next few years, frequently coming in first and losing. At the 1975 European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Norway, she won the gold medal in every event save the floor exercise, where she finished second, and the all-around title, marking her first significant international triumph at the age of 13.
Just a few months before she competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics, she scored ten at the American Cup the following year. During the Olympic Games in Montreal, Comaneci scored seven perfect tens, three of which came on the beam and four of which came on the uneven bars.
She took home gold in the uneven bars, balance beam, and individual all-around competitions. At the age of 14, she became the first Romanian gymnast to win the Olympic all-around title, and to this day, she is the youngest Olympic all-around champion in history.
After her outstanding Olympic performance, Comaneci persisted in being the best in the sport. In 1977, she made a defense of her European all-around title. But the following year proved difficult for her, and Bucharest and new coaches were required to train her by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.
She also experienced a growth spurt, increasing her height by several inches. She suffered from these new difficulties, and at the 1978 World Championships, she finished fourth. She was allowed to go back to her original coaches after this performance, and soon after that she won her third straight European all-around championship.
