At seven years old, she started formal training with him and his wife, Marta. While many other students at the school were required to live at the boarding school, she was able to continue living at home because she was a native of the town.

Having joined the home town team that same year, Comaneci made history as the youngest gymnast to win the Romanian Nationals at the age of 9. She participated in her first international competition the following year and took home her first all-around title.

She competed in significant junior gymnast competitions for the next few years, frequently coming in first and losing. At the 1975 European Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Norway, she won the gold medal in every event save the floor exercise, where she finished second, and the all-around title, marking her first significant international triumph at the age of 13.

But the following year proved difficult for her, and Bucharest and new coaches were required to train her by the Romanian Gymnastics Federation.

She was allowed to go back to her original coaches after this performance, and soon after that she won her third straight European all-around championship.
