While pursuing a degree in meteorology at the University of Utah, Zaffino interned and later worked as a weather producer at KTVX in Salt Lake City. He moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1985 to anchor the morning and evening weathercasts after moving to Traverse City, Michigan, in 1984 to forecast the weather for WGTU.
He eagerly made his way back to the West in 1985 to take a job as a weather anchor at KDRV in Medford, Oregon. He was employed by KATU in Portland in 1988 to supply weekend weather.
In addition to covering environmental issues, Zaffino honed his storytelling and writing skills for television news. After helping with the launch of KATU’s morning news, he was eventually promoted to the evening newscasts. In 1996, Matt left KATU to work as the Chief Meteorologist.
The Oregon Associated Press named him Best Weathercaster in 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999, and 2002, as well as in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, and 2015. In 2000, 2015, and 2016, Matt won Emmy Awards for outstanding individual achievement in weather casting. He has also been nominated for a number of additional awards.
He was honored in 2016 with induction into the prestigious National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Silver Circle for his more than 25 years of outstanding service in Northwest broadcasting.
He is the only person to have ever done a television live broadcast from Mount Hood’s summit. Along with the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics in Utah and Vancouver, he also covered the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia for KGW.
In the summer of 2004, he traveled to the Greenland Ice Sheet to report on climate change research and conduct live radio broadcasts for KINK FM in Portland.
