Keith Marler Bio
Keith Marler, FOX 9’s Emmy Award-winning Meteorologist, had a problem in college: he didn’t know what to do with his life.
He enjoyed science but did not want to be confined to a laboratory. He wanted to teach, but not in a small classroom.
He enjoyed hamming it up, but wasn’t sure if that was a “job-skill.” Then, one spring evening, he had a career epiphany that would guide his actions for the next several years: Keith decided to combine his two dream jobs of teacher and game show host and become (drum roll, please) a weatherman! Keith went on to graduate school for meteorology after finishing his bachelor’s degree in physics and math at the University of Maryland.
Keith got his first taste of broadcasting while working on a master’s degree and interning at TV stations in Washington, D.C.
Keith landed his first television job as the morning meteorologist at KBJR-News6 in Duluth despite making “the world’s worst resume tape” – his very first trip to Minnesota!
Keith and his wife Susan (whom he met and married at the University of Maryland) packed their belongings and relocated north.
Keith’s meteorological skills improved while he was in Duluth, and he was awarded the American Meteorological Society’s coveted Seal of Approval.
Keith returned to the nation’s capital after three years of snow, cold, and lutefisk to work as the weekend and noon meteorologist at WUSA in D.C. (see, internship connections do pay off!).
Keith and Susan decided to finally expand their family while there, but their son was born prematurely and died from Trisomy-13 (a genetic disorder).
Within days of Keith and Susan deciding that a fresh start was exactly what they needed, FOX 9 called and asked, “Hey…want to come back to Minnesota?” So, in 2003, the Marlers packed their belongings and relocated halfway across the country for the third time in six years, this time to the Twin Cities, and they have no plans to return.
Keith has given over 100,000 “On the 9s” morning weather reports at FOX 9, won multiple awards (including “America’s Favorite Weather Forecaster”), and been involved in several charities during his time at FOX 9. (The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the American Heart Association, and eQuality – just to name a few).
Keith and Susan have expanded their family while living in Minnesota, welcoming their daughter in 2004 and son in 2007, as well as a couple of crazy Bulldogs as part of “Team Marler” over the years.
Keith enjoys spending time with his family and friends (“home” is listed as his favorite vacation spot), loves a good movie (a holdover from his 6 years as a video store employee), geeks out on comic books (yes…comic books), and looks forward to spending time with his family in the afternoon (the ONLY benefit of starting work before 3 a.m.!). Keith and his wife Susan, daughter Gracie, and son Jack live in the Northwest Metro.
Meteorologist Keith Marler can be seen on FOX 9 Morning News from 4:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. every weekday, hosting the “FOX 9 Buzz” from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., and helming weather duties during “FOX 9 at 11 a.m.”
