Dean Stockwell, the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated actor best known for his roles in the revolutionary sci-fi series Quantum Leap and Battlestar Galactica, as well as David Lynch’s noir-fever dream Blue Velvet, has died at the age of 85. The actor’s death has been verified by Variety.
Stockwell’s career began when he was a youngster and lasted seven decades. Though he took a break from acting at various points throughout his career, he was nevertheless active, appearing in everything from sci-fi successes and animated series to TV movies and critically acclaimed independent films.
Stockwell was born into a performing family; his mother, Elizabeth Stockwell, was a vaudeville performer, and his father, Harry Stockwell, was a frequent presence on Broadway and had even voiced Prince Charming in Disney’s Snow White. Stockwell, who was born in 1936, had his acting debut six years later, in the Broadway production The Innocent Voyage.
Soon after, he signed with MGM, and in 1945, he landed his first film parts in The Valley of Decision and Anchors Aweigh; in 1947, he won a Golden Globe for Best Juvenile Actor for his performance in Gentleman’s Agreement.
Stockwell continued to work consistently throughout the 1990s and 2000s, starring in blockbusters such as Air Force One, serialized TV classics such as JAG, and even the rare animated show such as Captain Planet and the Planeteers (he voiced Duke Nukem). He then starred in another sci-fi success, the renowned revival of Battlestar Galactica, as the villainous commander of the Cylons, John Cavil.
