Jerome Johnson Richardson Sr., widely known as Jerry Richardson, was a prominent American businessman, former football player, and owner of the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL).
Born in Spring Hope, North Carolina, Richardson completed his high school education in Fayetteville before attending Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
During his time at Wofford, he played football and was an Associated Press Little All-America selection in 1957 and 1958. Richardson still holds Wofford’s single-game record with 241 receiving yards against Newberry in 1956, and he is also the record holder for touchdown receptions in a season (9 in 1958) and in a career (21).
Richardson was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 13th round and played two seasons in the NFL, earning Colt Rookie of the Year honors in 1959.
After his football career, Richardson used his bonus from the 1959 NFL championship and partnered with a friend to open the first Hardee’s franchise in Spartanburg, which they later owned 50/50.
