Emmett Shear Biography
Emmett Shear, an American Internet entrepreneur and investor, co-founded the live video platform Justin. tv. He served as the chief executive officer of Twitch after its spin-off from Justin.tv until March 2023.
Additionally, Shear held the position of a part-time partner at venture capital firm Y Combinator from 2011. In November 2023, he briefly assumed the role of interim CEO at OpenAI.
Raised in Seattle, Washington, Shear attended the Evergreen School for Gifted Children, where he formed a lasting connection with his eventual co-founder, Justin Kan, at the age of eight. Their bond developed through accelerated math classes and shared interests, including playing Magic: The Gathering.
In 2005, Shear and Justin Kan applied to the inaugural class of Y Combinator. As part of the program, they created a calendar application called Kiko, which they later sold on eBay for $250,000 following the introduction of Google Calendar.
The duo, along with Michael Seibel and Kyle Vogt, launched Justin. tv in 2006, initially featuring a 24/7 live video feed of Kan’s life using a webcam attached to his head. After approximately eight months of “lifecasting,” the team transitioned to providing a live video platform for anyone to publish content. Justin. tv grew to be one of the largest live video platforms globally, with over 30 million unique users each month until its closure on August 5, 2014.
Following the launch of Justin. tv in 2007, the platform expanded to include subject-specific content categories such as Social, Tech, Sports, Entertainment, News & Events, and Gaming. Gaming, in particular, experienced rapid growth and became the most popular content category on the site.
In June 2011, the company decided to separate gaming content under a new brand and site, naming it TwitchTV, inspired by the term “Twitch gameplay.” Shear assumed the role of CEO of Justin. tv on August 29, 2011, and retained the position as the company rebranded around Twitch in 2014, making it the core product.
On August 25, 2014, Amazon officially acquired Twitch for a reported $970,000,000. In March 2023, Shear announced his resignation as CEO, with Daniel J. Clancy succeeding him in the role.

Emmett Shear OpenAI
On November 19, 2023, Emmett Shear assumed the role of interim CEO at OpenAI, stepping in after the board decided to remove Sam Altman two days earlier. However, by November 21, an agreement was reached, resulting in the reinstatement of Altman as CEO. Reports had suggested that Shear had contemplated resigning from the CEO position unless the board provided evidence supporting Altman’s removal.
Shear had previously become a part-time partner at Y Combinator in June 2011, offering valuable advice to new startups in each batch.
Expressing concerns about the potential impact of artificial intelligence on civilization, Shear has publicly stated his “P(Doom),” or the probability of human extinction from AI, ranging between 5 and 50 percent.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Shear, via Twitch, donated the initial sum of US$1 million to initiate SF New Deal, a non-profit organization. The organization focused on ordering meals from San Francisco eateries and delivering them to individuals in need. Notably, SF New Deal was founded by Leonore Estrada, Shear’s Yale college classmate and owner of the Three Babes Bakeshop in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood.
