Crist was elected to the Florida Senate from the 20th district, which included parts of St. Petersburg and South Tampa, in 1992.
He defeated long-serving Democratic State Senator Helen Gordon Davis of Tampa by a margin of 58.3 percent to 41.7%.

Charles Joseph Crist Jr. (born July 24, 1956) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 13th congressional district of Florida’s representative since 2017.
The district’s headquarters are in St. Petersburg. From 2007 to 2011, he was the 44th Governor of Florida.
Crist began his political career as a Republican (GOP), serving in the Florida Senate from 1993 to 1999, unsuccessfully running for the U.S. Senate against incumbent Bob Graham in 1998, and then serving as Florida Education Commissioner from 2001 to 2003 and Florida Attorney General from 2003 to 2007, before being elected governor in 2006.
Crist ran for the United States Senate while still governor. Crist was overtaken in the polls by Marco Rubio in the 2010 race for the Republican nomination after the state GOP committee decided not to fund his election bid, and Crist left the Republican Party to run as an independent in April 2010.
In the general election, he was defeated by Rubio in a three-way race, receiving 30% of the vote to Rubio’s 49% and 20% from Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek. Crist’s governorship ended in January 2011.
Crist joined the Democratic Party on December 7, 2012, after endorsing President Barack Obama for reelection in 2012. On November 1, 2013, he declared his candidacy for governor in the 2014 election.

Crist was born on July 24, 1956, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Charles Joseph Crist, an American physician of Greek Cypriot and Lebanese ancestry, and Nancy (née Lee), of Scots-Irish, Swiss, and Welsh ancestry.
His surname is derived from the Greek name “Christodoulos.” Crist grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida, and attended Riviera Middle School and St. Petersburg High School, where he graduated in 1974.
Margaret Crist Wood, Elizabeth Crist Hyden, and Catherine Crist Kennedy are his three sisters. He attended Wake Forest University for two years.
Crist was a walk-on quarterback for the Demon Deacons during his freshman and sophomore years at Wake Forest before transferring to Florida State University in Tallahassee.

Early Career
Crist was hired as general counsel to Minor League Baseball, which was headquartered in St. Petersburg, after graduating from Cumberland School of Law in 1981 and passing the bar on his third attempt.
Crist became interested in politics and ran for public office for the first time in 1986, in the Republican primary for a state Senate seat in Pinellas County.
Crist joined his brother-in-law in private practice in St. Petersburg after losing in a runoff, but soon returned to politics as an aide on Connie Mack III’s successful 1988 United States Senate campaign, whom he has since described as his political mentor.
