Beauvais was born in Saint-Marc, Haiti, to nurse Marie-Claire Beauvais and lawyer Axel Jean Pierre.
After her parents divorced when she was a child, she moved to the United States with her mother and six older siblings at the age of seven, settling in Peabody, Massachusetts, where she enrolled in elementary school.
Beauvais arrived in the United States speaking only French and Creole, but she learned English by watching Sesame Street on television.
