He joined the BBC after working as a chartered accountant, and in 1990 he was promoted to BBC network television correspondent. He began working for the BBC News Channel in 1997 as a presenter of the evening shows. At the start of 2001, he began hosting the late-afternoon news program, first with Jane Hill and then Maxine Mawhinney. He and Hill were reunited in April 2006 and worked together on the 11 am–2 pm shift until March 2013, when they switched to the 2 pm–5 pm time slot from Tuesday to Friday, with Emily Maitlis presenting on Mondays.
He has reported extensively from Northern Ireland and has covered a number of significant news stories. During the Bosnian conflict, he traveled throughout the Balkans and reported from Bosnia on the fall of Srebrenica.
