Kathy Hochul, born on August 27, 1958, is an American politician who assumed the role of the 57th governor of New York on August 24, 2021. She is a member of the Democratic Party and holds the distinction of being New York’s first female governor.
Additionally, she is the first governor from Upstate New York since Nathan L. Miller held the position in 1920. Hochul was born in Buffalo, New York, and is the second of six children in a family of Irish Catholic descent.
She completed her undergraduate education at Syracuse University in 1980 and earned a Juris Doctor degree from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. in 1984.
Her political career began with service on the Hamburg town board, and she later served as deputy Erie County clerk. In 2007, Hochul was appointed as Erie County clerk. She was subsequently elected to a full term in that role in 2007 and reelected in 2010.
In May 2011, Kathy Hochul won a special election for New York’s 26th congressional district, defeating three other candidates to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of then-Representative Chris Lee. Her victory marked the first time a Democrat had represented the district in four decades, and she served as a U.S. representative from 2011 to 2013.
In the 2012 election, Hochul was defeated for reelection by Chris Collins after changes were made to the district’s boundaries and demographics in the decennial reapportionment process. Subsequently, she worked as a government relations executive for M&T Bank, based in Buffalo.
