Al Roker
Roker was born in the New York City borough of Queens. His mother, Isabel, is from Jamaica, and his father, Albert Lincoln Roker Sr., is from the Bahamas.
He wanted to be a cartoonist at first. He was raised Catholic because that was his mother’s religion. He went to Xavier High School in Manhattan and graduated.
He went to school at the State University of New York at Oswego and got a Bachelor of Arts in communications in 1976.
Roker worked as a weather anchor for CBS affiliate WHEN-TV (now WTVH) in Syracuse, New York, from 1974 to 1976, while he was a student at SUNY Oswego.
He was also a DJ at WNYO, the campus radio station, while he was in Oswego. After he finished school, Roker moved to Washington, D.C., and got a job as a weathercaster at Metromedia’s independent station WTTG. He stayed there for most of the next two years.
Roker started working for NBC in 1978 when he was hired at WKYC in Cleveland. At the time, WKYC was owned and run by NBC.
After five years in Cleveland, Roker was moved up to the network’s main station in his hometown, WNBC-TV. In late 1983, Roker moved back to New York City as a weekend weathercaster.
Within eight months, he became the station’s weeknight weathercaster. Roker took over for Dr. Frank Field, who had worked at WNBC-TV for 27 years but left because of a contract dispute.
From 1983 to 1996, Roker filled in for forecaster Joe Witte on the NBC News show NBC News at Sunrise. From 1990 to 1995, he filled in for Willard Scott and Bryant Gumbel on the Today Show.
From 1997 to the early 2000s, he filled in for Matt Lauer. In 1995, he became the host of CNBC’s weekend talk show The Al Roker Show.
David Letterman’s talk show, Late Night with David Letterman, taped across the hall from the WNBC news studio in the GE Building.
On one episode, Letterman asked Roker to join him in an elevator race. Because of this, Roker became the weather person for Weekend Today.
He also filled in for Willard Scott on the weekday version of Today when Scott was sick or away.
Scott announced at the beginning of 1996 that he was leaving Today for part time. On January 26, 1996, Roker got the regular time slot for the weather each weekday.
Roker’s studio remote forecasts, in which he talked to people outside and put them on camera, became a regular thing.
Over the years, Roker did more interviews and segments on the show. He keeps up the tradition that began with Scott of wishing centenarians a happy birthday every day.
In 2005, Roker reported on Hurricane Wilma from inside it. In a video that has gone viral, he is blown off his feet by the strong wind and clings to the cameraman.
In addition to being the weatherman and anchor for the Today Show, Roker started co-hosting the third hour of Today, called Today’s Take, on November 12, 2012.
Today’s Take was taken off of Megyn Kelly Today in February 2017, and its last episode aired on September 22, 2017. In 2018, when Megyn Kelly Today was canceled, Roker went back to co-hosting 3rd Hour Today.
Joe Biden shook hands with Roker during the 2013 inauguration of Barack Obama. Years later, when Roker was a reporter for NBC News at Biden’s own inauguration in 2021, the newly sworn-in president gave him a fist bump right before Biden walked into the White House.
In November 2014, Roker did a “Roker-thon,” in which he gave a nonstop, 34-hour weather forecast on NBC, from 10:05 p.m. on November 12, 2014, until about 8:00 a.m. on November 14, 2014. The event that broke a record was a fundraiser for the Crowdrise Campaign, which helped raise money for the military and USO.
During the week of November 6–13, 2015, he held a “Roker-thon 2” to raise money for Feeding America. This time, he talked about the weather in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. From March 27 to March 31, 2017, he went on “Roker-thon 3,” where he visited colleges and set a Guinness World Record at each one, like the longest conga line on ice and the largest human letter.
Since 1995 (except for 2022), Roker has been in charge of NBC’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, where he and some of his Today Show co-hosts give commentary.
He is known as the “uptown” host, and his main jobs are to cut the ribbon at the beginning of the parade and talk to celebrities who are watching the parade from 77th Street, where the parade starts.
Roker couldn’t host the coverage of the parade in 2022 because he was still getting better from blood clots that sent him to the hospital.
He likes to watch game shows. From 1996 to 1997, he was the host of the game show Remember This? on MSNBC. From March 5–9, 2007, he filled in for Meredith Vieira on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for a week.
Roker was the host of NBC’s Celebrity Family Feud in 2008.
In July 2016, he led a segment on Today called “Game On Today” that talked about five game shows and their hosts. He has played on both of Merv Griffin’s game shows, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune, as a famous person.
Roker has been the host of two shows on the Food Network: Roker on the Road and Tricked-Out Tailgating. He is also a big fan of barbecuing.
Roker gave weather reports to several radio stations, such as the smooth jazz stations WQCD (101.9 FM) in New York and WNWV (107.3 FM) in Cleveland. He did this through a service called the “Al Roker Radio Weather Network,” which was offered by United Stations Radio Networks.
Since then, Accuweather has taken its place. He also had a show on The Weather Channel called Wake Up with Al that aired live weekday mornings from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. from 2009 to 2015.
On September 5, 2018, it was announced that Roker would play Joe in the Broadway musical Waitress from October 5 to November 11. He later came back for a short time, from November 1 to November 24, 2019.
Roker wrote a series of murder mysteries with Dick Lochte that started in 2009. The books are about Billy Blessing, a famous chef who becomes an amateur detective.
The Midnight Show Murders, the second book in the series, was nominated for a 2011 Nero Award. The 2010 book The Morning Show Murders was turned into a 2018 Hallmark Movies and Mysteries movie starring Holly Robinson Peete.
Roker and his wife Deborah Roberts wrote the nonfiction book Been There, Done That: Family Wisdom for Modern Times. It came out in 2016.
