Born on August 13, 1996, Zain had been living with cerebral palsy since birth, a congenital disorder affecting movement, muscle tone, and posture due to brain damage occurring before or during birth.
Microsoft, in a statement to its staff, requested support for the grieving family and urged employees to keep them in their thoughts and prayers while respecting their privacy during this difficult time.

Satya Nadella and his wife Anu were 29 and 25 years old, respectively, living in a rented apartment near the Microsoft campus in Seattle, Washington, when they were expecting their first child. Zain’s birth, marked by a medical emergency during the thirty-sixth week of Anu’s pregnancy, profoundly affected Nadella, who recalled Zain’s arrival at just three pounds, silent and without a cry, at 11:29 p.m. on August 13, 1996.

Satya Narayana Nadella, born on August 19, 1967, is an Indian-American business executive serving as the executive chairman and CEO of Microsoft. He assumed the role of CEO in 2014, succeeding Steve Ballmer, and later became chairman in 2021, succeeding John W. Thompson.
Prior to his CEO role, Nadella held the position of executive vice president in Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group, overseeing the development and management of the company’s computing platforms.
Born in Hyderabad to a Telugu-speaking Hindu family, Nadella’s mother, Prabhavati, was a Sanskrit lecturer, and his father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, served in the Indian Administrative Service. Yugandhar originated from Bukkapuram in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, with ancestral ties to Nadella village in Guntur district (now part of Palnadu district).
Nadella attended the Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka in 1988. He then pursued an MS in computer science at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, completing his degree in 1990. Later, he obtained an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business in 1997.
In 1992, Nadella married Anupama, the daughter of his father’s IAS batchmate. Both Nadella and Anupama, the only children of their respective parents, met during their time at Manipal. The couple, residing in Clyde Hill and Bellevue, Washington, had three children—a son and two daughters.
Tragically, their son Zain, who faced legal blindness and cerebral palsy, passed away in February 2022 at the age of 26. Nadella has acknowledged the profound impact of being the father of a child with special needs as a pivotal turning point in his life.
