In 1989, Saban was offered the position of head coach at the University of Toledo following a brief stint as an assistant coach for the Houston Oilers in the NFL. Nick’s leadership completely changed the team, and they only lost two games in 1990.

Saban left Toledo after only one season in order to become the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. Even though he continued in this position for the following four years, Nick later came to regret it and called it one of the worst times of his career.

Saban took over as Michigan State University’s new head coach just before the 1995 campaign. He gradually improved the Spartans after a few unsuccessful seasons, guiding them to a successful season with just two losses in 1999. Nick Saban moved to LSU after Michigan State’s productive final season. The Tigers won a BCS National Championship under his five-year leadership.

In 2004, Nick Saban made a second NFL comeback as the Miami Dolphins’ new head coach. The first season was difficult for the team, and injuries made the second season even less successful. The Crimson Tide won additional championships and attained top rankings over the course of the following two years. The team regained its top form in 2015 after a somewhat sluggish start. Saban won his first Sugar Bowl championship in 2017.

Alabama was brought to its knees in the 2019 campaign after losing more than twice for the first time since 2010 and missing out on the College Football Playoffs.

But in 2020, the Crimson Tide got back on track and won the University’s 18th National Championship by defeating No. 3 Ohio State 52-24 in the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship. With the victory, Saban surpassed Paul Bryant in terms of all-time titles won with his sixth title with Alabama and seventh overall.
