Natalie Nakase Bio

Natalie Mitsue Nakase is an American basketball coach and former player born on April 18, 1980.

She grew up in Huntington Beach, California, where she attended Marina High School, leading the team to two Sunset League titles and won the 1998 Orange County Player of the Year award.

Nakase attended UCLA where she was a walk-on and later became a three-year starter at point guard.

She was also the first Asian American player in the National Women’s Basketball League (NWBL) playing for the San Jose Spiders in 2005 and the San Diego Siege in 2006.

In 2007, Nakase went to Germany to play with Herner but suffered another knee injury, leading her to retire as a player.

She then went into coaching and coached the Wolfenbüttel Wildcats in the Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga for two seasons.

She became the first female head coach in Japan’s top professional men’s league, bj league, after taking over the struggling team, Saitama Broncos, in the middle of the season.

Nakase then joined the Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA in 2012, beginning as an intern and then becoming an assistant coach for their NBA G League development team, Agua Caliente, in 2017.

In 2018, she became an NBA assistant for the Clippers before joining the Las Vegas Aces of the WNBA in 2022 as an assistant coach.

Nakase is a third-generation Japanese-American and the youngest of three daughters born to Gary and Debra Nakase. She was honored as one of the White House’s Champions of Change in 2013 for her contributions to women’s sports.

In 2022, Nakase became the first Asian American coach to win an WNBA title.
